eDEC Speaks at 2010 HTCIA Hong Kong Conference on Chinese cell phone analysis
eDEC chose the 2010 HTCIA conference of the Hong Kong chapter, from December 8-10, to introduce a mobile forensics industry topic that is much needed and seldom discussed. The topic, "Chinese Cell Phone Analysis, a Top-Down Approach," gave insight into the growing need to understand Chinese phones and the chips they are based on, as well as tools that can help. A demo was given of Tarantula, a new tool from eDEC that extracts and decodes from Chinese chipsets, set to release mid January 2011.
Ryan Judy, international sales manager for eDEC, describes the need for a solution, "600 million phones were produced in China in 2010, which represents 50% growth from last year. Of this total number, 400 million were exported to other countries. A large portion of these phones are "white-box", otherwise called unbranded, or fakes, and they are showing up all over the world. Emerging markets like Indonesia, India, Africa, and Latin America are seeing the highest increase in white-box phone usage because white-box phones are full of features and 1/3 to 1/5 the price of top international manufacturer phones. Examiners simply don't have the tools or the understanding to be able to process these phones, so they are ending up in a pile in the corner of the office. We hope to help this situation with the introduction of Tarantula."
HTCIA Hong Kong has proven to be a great international platform for sharing information and technologies over the past few years and eDEC was happy to be a part of it. "We really enjoyed seeing the positive response of Tarantula and listening to other experts from around the world. Of course we hope to come back next year," mentioned Ryan Judy.
information on Tarantula and background info on white-box phones can be found on the Mobile Forensics page.
